For The
Mythical Laboratory, Mikhail Karikis drew inspiration from the myth
of Orpheus, in which the ancient poet travels to the Underworld. The artist
paralleled this with the spatial consequences implied by the phenomenology
of dreams,
in which the sleeper is in the physical space of the bedroom
and the realm of dreams at the same time.
Mikhail created an installation for the disused astronomical observatory of University College London, which he divided into two areas horizontally with a layer of feathers suspended in the middle .
After observing a series of scientific graphs on sleep and dream phenomena placed in the lower area of the observatory, visitors were invited to ascend the ladder that lead to the invisible area of the observatory above the ceiling of white feathers. There, drawings suspended like constellations heightened the sense of lightness given by the shifted feathery horizon.
